What or who has had the biggest influence on your career?

I was about 4 years old and volunteered to come up on stage at an amusement park as part of the audience participation. When I got on stage, I felt this amazing connection with the audience. I helped make a fun experience even more fun. I loved that feeling. Today, whether I am acting in a movie or show, conducting a podcast interview, or instructing a dance class, the fact that I can connect with the audience and help them escape into a whole new happy place has been the biggest influence and motivation on my career.

What’s the biggest risk you’ve taken?

“The biggest risk I’ve taken was moving to a new city with no family, no friends and no idea what was going to happen. That’s followed by considering my degree in engineering and contemplating another career. Typically people are happy with one career, and having two and having a life outside of that is another huge risk.”

Profiles in Innovation: Cindy Fernandez-Nixon, Ansaldo STS USA /La Rumba Production Co.

“Coming from New Jersey to Pittsburgh wasn’t the most attractive place, culture wise, because there were not a lot of people who understood my culture,” said Ms. Fernandez-Nixon, 29.

She considered leaving when she finished her degree, but then saw an opportunity to help create the community she missed. Ms. Fernandez-Nixon launched “La Rumba” radio show through Carnegie Mellon University in July 2010, the first Latin music radio show in Pittsburgh for both Spanish and English speakers.

Even when there doesn’t seem to be a way, a successful person always finds a way to make it happen. They will organize resources and independently create an opportunity. A great example of such a person is Cindy E. Fernandez, also known as “Cece” in her Pittsburgh community. This fascinating young lady has enjoyed successes in various areas of her life. Cece holds a master’s degree in engineering and is the Western Pennsylvania chapter president of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. When Cindy first moved to Pittsburgh as a senior engineer for Westinghouse, she couldn’t find the music she loved on the radio. So she proposed an idea for a Latino music and talk program to Carnegie Mellon University, using some of its open airtime. Until August 2012, Cindy Fernandez was a senior engineer and technical lead at Westinghouse Electric Company (Pittsburgh, PA).
